I create private sales for folks to do special orders, and it works well. It does feel a bit hacky, but folks can figure it out. When you create an event, you can make it private - under Advanced Options (hide from storefront). I then send them the link to place their order and close the sale when they're done. I've also created a catalog so people can see all the items I can make by creating an event with orders that open in the future, and I've added all my menu items. People are able to view items and prices but can't order. That also works well for me.

I’m wondering the same. The only thing I can think of, for now, is to create a Special Orders event that doesn’t close. I sent an inquiry about a permanent photo gallery, other than past sales, so customers can see what may be available for special orders. I’m fairly new to Hot Plate so someone who’s been here longer might more info.
